Before you can track expenses, CiviQ needs to know your accounts โ your HDFC savings, PhonePe wallet, Paytm balance, and the โน800 stuffed in your wallet. Don't worry, you don't give CiviQ your bank password. You just tell it the name.
๐ฎ๐ณ You might be surprised how many accounts you actually have. Most people in India have 2-3 bank accounts, 2-3 UPI wallets, and cash โ and they're tracking none of them. CiviQ fixes that.
Account types in CiviQ
- ๐ฆ Bank account โ HDFC, SBI, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, any bank
- ๐ฑ Wallet โ PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, Amazon Pay
- ๐ต Cash โ the money in your actual wallet
- ๐ณ Credit card โ track spending and outstanding balance separately
How to add an account
1
Open Accounts from the sidebar
Click 'Accounts' in the left sidebar. If you're on mobile, tap the menu icon at the top.
2
Tap 'Add account'
The blue button in the top right. A form slides in.
3
Choose the account type
Bank, Wallet, Credit Card, or Cash. This affects how the account is categorised in your reports.
4
Give it a name
Be descriptive. 'HDFC Savings', 'PhonePe', 'SBI Salary Account', 'Paytm Wallet', 'Cash'. You'll see this name on every transaction, so make it clear.
๐ก If you have two HDFC accounts, call them 'HDFC Savings' and 'HDFC Current' โ not both 'HDFC'.
5
Enter the current balance
Open your banking app, check your balance right now, and enter it here. This is the starting point โ CiviQ will update it as you log transactions. You can leave it blank and update later.
6
Pick a color and icon (optional)
Makes your accounts easy to tell apart in transaction lists. HDFC gets blue? PhonePe gets purple? You decide.
7
Tap Save
The account appears in your Accounts page immediately.
What accounts should I add?
Example
Here's a typical setup for a Bengaluru professional: โข HDFC Savings โ salary account, most spending โข PhonePe โ UPI payments, quick transfers โข SBI โ linked to parents, occasional use โข Cash โ for auto rides and chai
๐ก Start with just your primary salary account and the wallet you use most. Add others as you go. Getting started with 2 accounts beats never starting because you're trying to add 8.
How balances work
CiviQ does not connect to your bank. It tracks a running balance based on what you tell it. When you log a โน450 Swiggy expense against your HDFC account, CiviQ deducts โน450 from HDFC's balance. When you log your salary as income to HDFC, it adds the amount. The displayed balance is always your starting balance ยฑ transactions logged in CiviQ.
โ ๏ธ If your opening balance is wrong, all subsequent balances will be off by the same amount. Double-check the number when you set up a new account.
